I awoke on April 5, full of excitement and enthusiasm, to take part in the “LENIwanag Ang Silangan: Leni-Kiko Rizal Grand People’s Rally,” which was taking place in my hometown, Antipolo City.

The event was organized by my fellow “Kakampinks” (a term used for Vice President Leni Robredo’s supporters), who wanted to show their support for her presidential campaign, and for her running mate, Senator Kiko Pangilinan, and their slate.

I volunteered as part of the social media team, where I was in charge of social media activities such as posting and responding to inquiries and messages, which I handled with enthusiasm.

I began to travel toward the venue after finishing my class. And I ran into a group of young kakampinks who were planning to show their support in the most creative way possible, including funny placards, statements, over-the-top costumes, and even spontaneous talent exhibitions.

However, what captured my attention most were the elderly who came from other places and took the time to travel and see Vice President Robredo to express their support for her.

An old lady uttered, “Iboboto ko si Leni para kahit mamatay ako, tiyak akong magiging maayos mga apo ko.”

(English Translation: I’ll vote for VP Leni so that my grandchildren’s well-being is ensured even after I’m gone.)

The program finally began, and the audience burst into applause and excitement, despite being soaked from the rain, as the performers and fellow kakampinks showcased their God-given talents.

In spite of the gloomy weather, the rally persisted.

Later on, the rain ultimately turned into a downpour, soaking the attendees. The weather, however, did not deter them, as they continued to sing along with the performances, louder than before.

As a first-time volunteer at a rally like this, I was amazed by how enthusiastic the crowd was.

The event was held not only to support the aspiring candidates but for people to enjoy the event and build camaraderie among the attendees.

The rally may have ended, but the memories I created with these newfound friends who also chose to stand up for themselves, fight for what they believe is right, and show their support for these potential leaders will never be measured and bought.
