After discovering the virus two years ago, North Korea received its first-ever covid case.
The first documented case of covid was discovered in Pyongyang, prompting public worry over-vaccination availability and medical infrastructure.
North Korean health officials went on to say that on May 16th, they received eight confirmed deaths and over 400,000 confirmed cases of fever-like symptoms linked to COVID-19.
Pyongyang was offered the COVAX global vaccine sharing program by China, Russia, and the United Nations, but they declined. Some experts warn them that they are unprepared for this situation and will want assistance.
According to Dr. Khetrapal Singh, who is known as the regional director of the World Health Organization South-East Asia said, "North Korea is yet to initiate COVID-19 vaccination."
Dr. Singh explained that there is a possible risk that the virus may spread rapidly to the country unless curtailed with appropriate and fast measures.
Six additional deaths and 232,880 more individuals with feverish symptoms were reported on Wednesday, a week after the first covid 19 case was detected; however, there was no evidence that any of these people had tested positive.
Many authorities wondered how they came up with this total number of cases if the country lacked test kits and other medical services as the COVID-19 Symptoms became more widespread.
The exact number of fatalities is unknown, but many feel it was three times higher than the current figure.
