[Act Now] Survival in an online class

The pandemic has brought so many changes in our lives, including the education system. To prevent the spread of COVID-19, “social distancing” has been implemented to avoid close contact with other people. Because of this, public gatherings were put on hold, and public places had to be closed down.

The schools were not an exemption. The education had to continue amidst the pandemic, and that was when online and modular learning came into existence. And one thing was for sure: it was not an easy adjustment for the students.

With the situation we are currently facing right now, online and modular learning is undoubtedly much safer than face-to-face classes. However, it is also evident that they are not as effective and accessible.

Not everyone can excel in an online class since some learn better in a physical environment instead of online. Not everyone can study and learn by themselves using the self-learning modules, and some prefer to have a professional to guide them.

Not everyone is privileged enough to own a device and pay for the internet to study online, yet most schools are teaching in an online setup. And the more schools do this, the more students are being left behind.

Cheating is also rampant in online classes, especially now that it is easier for students to look for answers on the internet, while self-learning modules can be answered by one’s relative or a friend, and no one would have any idea about them.

Was it the right idea to have let the students study in the middle of the pandemic? Or was it better if we had an academic freeze and not let any learner be left behind?

Today, any student can pass and get a high grade without the certainty of truly learning in these kinds of setups. And seeing how the new education system works, it is visible that the students are barely learning and just merely surviving in this time of the pandemic.
